about

The source material for this recording was created principally during a two-day session at the Long Island City studio of the late, great New York recording engineer Sasha Victory, in summer 2002 (which sessions also produced most of the tracks for my 2004 solo album Eight Pieces in Suspended Time). The instruments used were an assemblage of oversize bodhrans, roto-toms, bass drums, and Chinese, Turkish, and American bells and cymbals, all arranged into a bastard simulacrum of a drum kit and played with tympani mallets. The specific tuning of the instruments, along with their generally open-voiced character, was such that, when any single instrument was struck, the entire array would erupt in an aurora of sympathetic overtones — an effect collaborators from the time remember as "that roar." If memory serves, the package of recordings I sent Z'ev to work his magic on also included snippets of me playing several hand instruments, including a Persian tombak and a particularly lively pair of Ghanaian adodo bells, both of whose signatures I seem to detect in the piece, in spirit if not reality.
